Major patheticism I am....I run amok on every board, then disappear for a really long time. Shame on me! lol Anyway, NEXT CHAPTER!
~ Chapter 4 ~
Another day of driving passed somewhat quickly. Nothing much really happened. No dreams, no visions. And most definitely – no stallions.
We stopped at this rinky-dink hotel just outside of the Arkansas border. Just a day of no driving and relaxation seriously wouldn’t kill us. So that’s exactly what we did. Our destination – ‘Calico Rock’ – was only around 176 miles away anyway. Plus the moving trucks definitely wouldn’t be there before us. So what was the rush?
Calico Rock has got to be the smallest town I’d ever seen. It’s the size of a grain of salt, sugar, or maybe even sand compared to any normal-sized Chicago suburb. The entire town is two highways intersecting each other and a bunch of off-shoots that somehow count as roads that people live on. Yes, Calico Rock is an actual rock – cliff, technically – that can be found on the outskirts of the Ozark National Forest, overlooking the town.
No, it is not even slightly ‘calico’ colored.
And if I thought the town was small, the school is even smaller. Calico Rock High School looks like it only has fifty to seventy-five students. Tops. I don’t exactly know about the elementary or middle schools, because I wouldn’t actually be going there. Hopefully.
------------------------------------------
The next morning, we started off bright and early, got to breakfast, and headed out. So much for a break.
By the time we finally arrived in Calico Rock, it was five in the afternoon, and the sun was, yet again, about to set. To my right, open fields. To my left, open fields. Where the heck was the town? A sign came up on the side of the road with ‘Welcome to Calico Rock’ in big, bold letters. And on the horizon was a mountain. Upon closer inspection, it was a small cliff, overlooking the tiniest city I had ever seen.
There it is everyone –Calico Rock. Yay.
Honestly, it wasn’t that bad of a town. A few restaurants here, a few gift shops and tourist areas there. There was even a gigantic theatre in a plaza that had a Petsmart and Wal-mart. Good old Wal-mart. There was also a CVS Pharmacy. Me and my family all agree that it will be ‘Closing Very Soon’ due to its crappy service. Or lack thereof.
We reached the center of town. Sidewalks, trees and rosebushes surrounded a fountain. It was a beautiful fountain, but I’m more concerned by the statue standing in its center. It was the statue of a horse. Specifically, a stallion carved in pure white marble. Crap.
“Hey mom, it’s him!” Joey screeched at the top of his lungs. “It’s Mariah’s horsey!” Perfect.
“Yeah, he looked like that. Except his eyes turn from black to crimson, he has markings in dark grey, a jet black mane and tail, and a swirling sapphire tattoo on his right shoulder.”
The entire car went silent, except for the minute hum of the road passing beneath us.
“What was that, Mariah?”
“Nothing.” I shut my mouth and stared at the statue, thinking of how much of an annoying coincidence its presence was.
Kivahri. Who are you really, and what the hell are you doing.
‘Mariah’, I heard his voice in my head. ‘We will meet soon. I promise’.
Gulp. I started coughing, but no one really seemed to notice.
“Hey, you want to check out the fountain later? After we get settled in?” Dad joked. I was not amused.
“Actually, I was wondering, that is, if you don’t mind…” I started, unsure what exactly to ask and figure out how not to sound like a blubbering, whiny child. “Just give me our address. I’d like to check it out for myself. Then I’ll meet up with you guys when I’m done.” I smiled convincingly, even though my heart wasn’t in it, and the rest of me wasn’t buying it.
“Yeah, sure.” My mom scribbled on a little slip of paper, then handed it to me. Dad stopped the car as I stuffed the paper in my pocket, and jumped out.
“Have fun!” they all yelled. Yeah, right. Like recon missions and getting the living daylights scared out of you is ever fun. I speed walked down the sidewalk, and swore I could hear the nearby pedestrians and tourists thinking ‘What’s her problem?’ I finally made it to the fountain, and stopped abruptly to catch my breath. He was magnificent, minus the details I had blurted out in the car. The white marble glistened and glittered in the setting sun, as if diamonds had been used to carve and polish it. Or it was made in heaven. Whichever made more sense.
Besides its bizarre and heavenly glow, it was carved perfectly. You could plainly see all his muscles and even some of his bones. Every line and curvature of his body was distinguishable and refined.
I was staring blankly at the statue until I finally noticed that people passing by were starting to stare at me. Then I realized I was on my knees, on the ground in front of it. Oops. I quickly rose to my feet, and moved my gaze to something a little more intriguing. Like the plaque at his feet.
It read –
Kivahri
Guardian of Calico Rock
Well that was just bloody great. He did exist. And every resident here knew it. I resolved to find out what the hell was going on.
Starting another book real soon, so chill out while i play with the first chapter on that one. Cheers!
